Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How do I become an Ashdown officer?

Apply online before Monday, March 9 at 11:59 PM.

Q: Why should I become an Ashdown officer?

By becoming an Ashdown officer, you have given yourself the exciting opportunity to be actively involved in the oldest and newest graduate community at MIT! You could make new friends and have fun while honing your leadership, communication, and organization skills at the same time. Benefits include networking opportunities, seniority points for our internal room lotteries, the chance to participate in special officer events, and bypassing the MIT Housing allocation process in the spring. What's more, after approximately two years of outstanding service as assessed by the Ashdown House Executive Committee (AHEC), you will be given continuing status in Ashdown. This means that you do not have to enter the general housing allocation and you can stay in Ashdown for the whole duration of your graduate study. Finally, officers recruited or renewed in the spring are guaranteed housing at Ashdown House for the next academic year provided that they complete their duties as officers.

Q: Who can apply to be an Ashdown officer?

All full-time MIT graduate students can apply to be Ashdown officers. This includes people who are currently NOT staying in Ashdown. We welcome applications from graduate students staying in other graduate residences or off-campus. Once you are selected to be an officer, you will need to move to Ashdown House. Current Ashdown officers NEED to apply again! They can choose to apply for the same position or a different position depending on their preferences. Last but not least, current Ashdown residents are most welcome to apply and get involved in our community.

Q: What do Ashdown officers do?

In addition to fulfilling the duties and responsibilities for their specific positions, officers must comply with certain basic requirements. First, all officers must complete a proposal for each work period (i.e., summer, fall, spring) to establishing projects, goals, and events that will be held over the given period. Officers should also attend the fall, spring, and transition dinners during which business relevant to their duties may be discussed. AHEC will also ask officers to provide updates on their progress and feedback on projects and events as needed.

Q: How does the Ashdown officer recruitment and selection process work?

Ashdown House is proud to have an excellent team of officers who work to strengthen our community and include the quality of life at our dorm. Officers are selected by the Ashdown House Executive Committee (AHEC) who carefully read all applications and interview candidates as needed. Positions are matched based on candidate interests and qualifications, as well as the availability and needs for each officer position.

Q: What does AHEC look for when recruiting new officers?

AHEC values officers who are enthusiastic about contributing to our community and are creative in their ideas for projects and events. In addition to having skills and experience relevant to their specific volunteer roles, our officers are self-motivated, organized, and committed to fulfilling their roles as officers. They must show initiative, leadership, and be able to work both independently and in teams as needed. Finally, Ashdown officers must conduct themselves with honesty, integrity, and respect.

Q: What is the time commitment for Ashdown officers?

Officers are recruited to their positions for a work period of one year. Fall and IAP recruits are expected to start working as soon as they are selected and should continue to fulfill their duties until May 31. Please be aware that officers are required to spend 10 hours of work on their officer responsibilities per month. AHEC emphasizes that becoming an officer is a serious commitment to serve the Ashdown Community.

Q: What happens if an officer decides to quit or is dismissed from the position?

Our officer positions exist because they are essential in keeping the dorm running, maintaining our lively community, and improving the quality of life at Ashdown. AHEC counts on officers to live up to their commitment and meet the expectations outlined for their positions. Given that housing for officers is contingent upon completion of their duties, officers who fail to meet requirements may be dismissed from their positions and will lose their housing at Ashdown. (This does not include residents who already have continuing status at our dorm.) Therefore, being an officer is a not a trivial commitment and prospective officers should be sure that they understand the extent of their roles as members of the Ashdown officer family.
